about

Named the best Canadian rock song of all time in separate polls conducted by Chart Magazine in 1996, the Globe And Mail in 2002 and the Toronto Star in 1991, the Demics' seminal 1978 garage-punk recording of “(I Wanna Go To) New York City” on Ready Records was also one of the most requested songs of all time on Toronto radio station CFNY.

"’New York City’ was one of those songs that managed to capture a moment in Canadian musical history," CFNY's Alan Cross wrote at the time. "It had that special kind of punk grit - equal parts anger, boredom and fuzz - that made thousands of young Canadian punks say, 'That's me! They're singing about me!'"

The Demics broke up in 1982 unable to top “New York City”’s appeal. Guitarist Steve Koch and drummer JD Witherspoon teamed up with alt-country legend Handsome Ned soon after, but in the years that followed, not much was ever heard from the Demics' charismatic vocalist Keith Whittaker.

Although Whittaker sadly succumbed to cancer in 1996, his legend lives on. Since his death, he's been eulogized by the Cowboy Junkies (“Misguided Angel”), Blue Rodeo (“Rage”) and the Payolas' Paul Hyde (“The Maddest Of The Mad”) and appeared as a character in Sarah Dearing's award-winning novel Courage My Love.

Bullseye Records is proud to announce the release of ‘Drink To Me’ for digital download, a 12-track compilation of previously unheard songs that the extraordinarily talented Whittaker wrote and recorded with Steven Davey (The Dishes/Everglades) in the early 90s. Gone is the angry young man of “New York City” replaced by the ornery curmudgeon of Drink To Me's “Misery Guts” and “Honestly Ed”. The set also includes a remarkable cover of Joe South's “Walk A Mile In My Shoes”.

The original CD version of this product was released August 16, 2007
