The 1990s Toronto music scene produced a diverse mix of bands and collaborations that mixed up styles and genres. A big part of that scene was Brass Bikini, an eclectic group of musicians that came together to create a sound that was at once heavy, progressive, wacky and still danceable. Working with Jaimie Vernon and Bullseye Records, they released ‘Tastes Like Chicken’ in 1991 and it quickly became a favourite on University radio stations and CFNY in Toronto. They were well known for their theatrical performances, a notable favourite was “Dead Elves Don’t Dance and Santa Claus Ain’t Wearing Pants”, and their energetic front woman Gabrielle Roddy. The incredibly talented line up of musicians included the core group, James Stamos on bass, Justin Roddy on keys, Rob Kemp on guitar, and Matt DeMatteo on drums. Other musicians involved in shows and recordings included Matt Mistruzzi on drums, Peter Crowley on bass, Mike Whitla on guitar, and Peter Hill on bagpipes.
