about

The three great milestones of hope in my lifetime have been the collapse of the Soviet Union, the dismantling of the Berlin Wall, and the release of Nelson Mandela from a South African jail after spending more than a 1/4 of his life behind bars.

This song was written immediately after seeing the benefit concert for Mandela featuring such artists as Eurythmics singing a bastardized run through of 'Bo Diddley' using the chant 'Hey, Mandela' as a mantra/

I thought that a man with such courage, pride and wisdom deserved a rallying cry with a little more dignity and one that was in tune with the people he fought to protect and win freedom for.

Written February 1, 1990.

lyrics

Children, Deliver us from evil
Children, Deliver us from evil

G// C/ G// D ~ G// C/ D// G

He feels the weight lifted from his shoulders
Squints at the sun a quarter century older
He fought for the people from his prison cell
To free them from the bondage of this mortal Hell.

D/// C///
They WHISPERED
Children, Deliver us from evil
They WHISPERED
Children, Deliver us from evil…..yeah, yeah

One law for them, another law for him
How could the meek ever possibly win
Like dominoes they toppled and set right again
This eight percent solution must come to an end.

They’re CRYIN’
Children, Deliver us from evil
They’re CRYIN’
Children, Deliver us from evil….yeah, yeah, yeah

BRIDGE - D

He feels the weight lifted from his shoulders
Squints at the sun a quarter century older
He’s fighting for the common man
Now that he’s free
Gravity will bring them crashing to their knees

They’re SINGING
Children, Deliver us from evil
They’re SINGING
Children, Deliver us from evil

[a cappella]
Children, Deliver us from evil [deliver us from evil, yeah, yeah, yeah]
Children, Deliver us from evil [deliver us from evil]

Oh, children [Children, Deliver us from evil]
Deliver us from evil [Children, Deliver us from evil]
Children, I said now children [Children, Deliver us from evil]
Deliver us from evil [Children, Deliver us from evil]
